Twenty years ago Jonathan Gee, Tony Kofi and Ben Hazelton, all living ten minutes from each
other in Leyton started rehearsing the music of the great Thelonious Monk. Two years later they
started gigging either as The Monk Liberation Front ( with help from fellow Monk aficionados,)
playing the complete works in one sitting, at the London Jazz Festival and around Italy, or as the
Tony Kofi Quartet playing Berlin, New York, Shanghai, Ronnie Scotts, and releasing Tony’s award
winning album All is Know. Tonight with Rod Youngs on drums they bring their love for and
expertise in Monk’s timeless music.
Jonathan is known for his acclaimed trio work, and playing with Pharoah Sanders,
Joe Lovano, Tim Whitehead, and many others. Tony has worked with everyone from Julian
Joseph to Abdullah Ibrahim to Ornette Coleman, and recently released an award winning tribute
to Cannonball Adderley. Ben has been seen with artists such as Talvin Singh and Benet Mclean,
and Rod with Gil Scott Heron, Lee Konitz and Jon Hendricks.
