This UK based group presents vibrant European Contemporary Jazz, played by a quartet of superb musicians…performing music from their Ubuntu Music release “Earth Songs”.
The leader and composer is tenor and soprano saxophonist Jon Lloyd. Jon has been part of the UK jazz and free music scene for several decades (Jon Lloyd Quartet with Paul Rogers, Mark Sanders, John Law; groups featuring Phil Wachsmann, Marcio Mattos, Stan Adler, Paul Clarvis, Tom Farmer, Asaf Sirkis),  and has now turned his attention to European contemporary jazz; using classical and non-western music influences as well as jazz sources to write vibrant, melodic and emotionally direct new jazz compositions. The quartet also comprises the virtuosic John Law (Congregation, Re-Creations, Art of Sound Trio with Yuri Golubev, Asaf Sirkis) on piano, Nick Pini (Laura Marling, Seth Lakeman, Izzie Yardley, Iain Ballamy) on double bass and Alex Goodyear (Yetii, Simon Spillett, Re-Creations, Jake McMurchie) on drums.
“His tunes are steeped in the ECM aesthetic, and he and long-time collaborator John Law on piano make it sound like the only music you ever want to hear.”
Jon Turney, London Jazz News, 2023
“The quartet’s sound emerging from the mutual understanding and anticipation shared by saxophone and piano… miraculous… bass and drums picking up on the telepathy too.”
Nigel Jarrett, Jazz Journal, 2024
“An absorbing and immersive performance by a quartet playing jazz from a distinctly European perspective … this was one of the most remarkable group performances ever seen at Black Mountain Jazz.”
Ian Mann, The Jazz Mann, 2024
