Preston’s gift is to discover the right voice to fit the vibe of his composition. Yes, there are echoes of Frisell on the miniature ‘Ur Text’, but the point is the resonances jigsaw together the chordal textures and sense of storytelling that is deep in these different songs. Preston teases us by suggesting the familiar then leading us into a sound world that is fresh yet unnerving. The Volume One in the album’s title suggests there are more treasures to come. Here’s to Volume Two. [Jazzwise, June 2023]
